ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia:July 2 (Xinhua) — The Ethiopian Transport Authority on Monday announced it will organize training to heavy truck drivers in less than a week time, aiming at furthering effective and efficient transport services in import-export corridors.
Gashaw Kebede, Director for Heavy Truck Transport Services within the Authority, told reporters that the month-long-training will be provided to heavy truck drivers who operate in Addis Ababa- Djibouti and Addis Ababa-Metema-Sudan corridors for import-export businesses.
Gashew stated heavy truck drivers are the backbone for and play a key role in ensuring effective and efficient transportation of import and export items which have significant contribution in building the country’s economy.
Therefore, he said, the training is offered for further safety and boosting the competitiveness of the country’s export items, most of which are agriculture products. The country has enormous resources, especially in the agriculture sector; it exports coffee, flower, horticulture products and sesame among others, he said.
Multifarious activities are being undertaken to further increase the competitiveness of the export items in international markets, and ensuring effective and efficient logistics and transport service is one of the activities being carried out in the country, he said.
The director also noted heavy truck drivers in an estimated number of 10,000 are expected to attend the training which is organized in a manner it never affects their day-today activities. He revealed currently four towns including Addis Ababa have already been selected as training centers. (Xinhua)
