In the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI), shrewd investors are increasingly eyeing legacy industries such as plumbing, electrical engineering as well as Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) businesses.
An analysis of 240 business videos from content creators by a trend intelligence platform, Virlo, reveals viability of “boring” businesses, which it says generates 20.3 million views.
BizBuySell’s 2026 first-quarter research found that 49% of surveyed small-business buyers identified as “corporate refugees,” while 37% cited the risk of AI displacing their jobs.
It found that buyers were increasingly concentrating on companies with stable cash flow and recurring revenue.
“What we’re seeing now is almost the opposite fantasy. A company that fixes air conditioners or collects waste can suddenly look attractive because people immediately understand why customers will still need it next month,” Nic Mauro, Co-founder of Virlo, explains .
Mr. Mauro says the appeal is driven by the fact that people already need technical services.
Plumbing, HVAC and waste removal, for example, solve everyday problems without having to create a new market. And the market is big with demand always recurring.
To him, repairs, maintenance and ongoing service can bring customers back because the core work is harder to automate.
AI can help with scheduling, marketing and admin, but someone still has to fix the air conditioner or repair the pipe.
The status symbol is changing,” Mauro says. “For years, entrepreneurs were told the exciting business was the one that could disrupt everything. Now, a business with customers who will still need you next month can look just as ambitious. AI has made durability part of the dream.”
The revelation reflects a change in what entrepreneurship looks like online. But will the surprising aspiration stick for long?
These changes are appearing in business schools too, with the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business reporting that MBA students and alumni are increasingly considering businesses such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical services, landscaping and precision manufacturing.
Technical ventures that were once boring can now offer strong fundamentals while being less vulnerable to AI disruption than many desk-based businesses. But will the excitement be there for the long term?
