Uchumi, Unilever among firms owing Mumias millions

Mumias Sugar Company is owed Ksh241 million by several companies, among them a company associated with the Odinga family.

Otifier Logistics is the highest debtor with Ksh36.6 million followed by Odinga-family owned Spectre International Ltd,  which a debt of Ksh33.9 million. Other debtors include Uchumi Supermarkets, Unilever Kenya Limited, Ukwala Supermarkets and United Distillers Vintners Limited.

Mumias Sugar Company has been in the limelight for losing billions of shillings over the years and now requires over Ksh2 billion in bailout. Struggling Uchumi Supermarkets owes the sugar miller Ksh6.6 million for sugar it took but is yet to be paid for.

Other supermarkets that received sugar that they have not paid for include Ukwala Supermarket, Nairobi, with a debt of Ksh2.8 million and Yatin Supermarket that owes Ksh319,320.

Unilever Kenya is also listed as having a debt of Ks2.2 million. The list of debtors that is dated 19th June indicates that the total debt owed by sugar buyers amounts to Ksh156.7 million.

Molasses customers owe Mumias Sugar Ksh38.89 million while water customers are holding Ksh2.3 million in debt. Three firms owe Ksh30.5 million for ethanol. Another firm, Y H Wholesalers, owes Mumias Sugar Company Ksh12.7 million relating to imported sugar.
