The World Bank has appointed Diariétou Gaye as the new Country Director for Kenya, Rwanda and Eritrea. Ms. Gaye, a Senegalese national, assumed her new position in Nairobi on May 1, 2013, replacing Johannes Zutt, who has moved to Bangladesh and Nepal.

Ms. Gaye joined the Bank in January 1996 as a Senior Country Economist, after serving in the Ministry of Economy and Finance in Senegal. She has since held various positions, including as Country Manager for Benin and Togo. In the period between 2007 and 2010, she was on external service with the African Development Bank as Regional Director for East African countries.

Her most recent assignment has been as Country Director for Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Ms. Gaye brings to her new position a series of accomplishments as an economist, manager, and leader. She has had extensive operational experience in different institutions working on development and policy change in difficult contexts. She also received a Good Manager Award from the Staff Association in 2005. Her main priority in Kenya will be to develop, with the government, the Bank’s new Country Partnership Strategy for Kenya.
