Owners of uncollected IDs to be arrested

Chiefs have been issued with a one-week ultimatum to distribute over 80,000 identity cards that remain uncollected in the Rift Valley region. Regional Commissioner Wasiambo Wanyama issued the directive when he toured West Pokot County at the weekend.

Mr Wanyama accused chiefs of sleeping on the job while issuing the one-week ultimatum. “Chiefs have been issued with motor bikes to facilitate movement. I don’t understand why they have failed in distributing the identity cards,” he said.

He said the situation has adversely affected government planning and execution of services and also called on residents to collect their IDs in their respective collection centres. “It’s a crime for an adult to lack an identity card. We shall start arresting those people found without identity cards,” he said.

Mr Wanyama also asked parents in marginalised counties to embrace education and take their children to school.

He said peace has been restored in most parts of the counties and parents had no reason to bar their children from going to school. “For the past 10 months, we have experienced peace in this region and we want to ensure the peaceful coexistence is maintained by taking our children to school,” he said.
