More than half the buldings in Nairobi city do not meet safety standards, acting Lands Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i says, and will thus be restructured or demolished.
The minister said up to 52% of the structures already inspected in Kenya’s capital have defects. These include areas like Kahawa West, Zimmerman, Huruma, Mathare North and Kisii, he said.

Dr Matiang’i asked developers who had already been issued with demolition notices to respect the directive or face forceful demolition by the Government. He blamed the situation on incompetence, corruption, unprofessional practices and lack of capacity in the construction sector.
At the forum attended to curb bulding collapses held yesterday in Nairobi and attended by professionals in the industry and some county leaders, Dr Matiang’i promised that officials involved in the approval of risky buildings will be brought to book.
This year seven buildings have collapsed so far, forcing President Uhuru Kenyatta to order for an audit of all property in the capital.
