Western Kenya will be the first region to host a unique factory that will utilise rabbit urine in manufacturing fertilizer. The construction of the Ksh6 million factory in Vihiga County that is set to begin next month following approval of the site by relevant authorities.

County Woman Representative Dorcas Kedogo says the factory will be operational in October.

“The urine will be collected from residents who rear rabbits. The factory will then turn the waste into fertiliser to be used by farmers for planting and top-dressing,” said Ms Kedogo.

The plan to build the factory comes after the lawmaker launched a campaign in the region for the residents to venture into rabbit keeping.

“The factory will boost the rearing of rabbits in this county,” Ms Kedogo told the Nation at the Emmabwi Church of God in Emuhaya . “The factory will create employment for farmers and many of our people,” she said and urged locals to embrace rabbit rearing as the factory will rely on urine from the domestic animal as the main raw material.

It will be a boost to the many farmers who ventured into rabbit farming, but there are doubts on whether the residents will provide enough supply of urine to sustain the factory. The plant will also provide employment to residents and stimulate an improvement in infrastructure.

Western Kenya and neigbouring regions such as Nyanza and Rift Valley are predominantly agricultural and will provide read market if the fertilizer is embraced by farmers.
