Two women join race for Chief Justice job

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has released the full list of applicants for the vacant position of the Chief Justice. Also publicized are the names of applicants for the Deputy Chief Justice’s position and one vacant position for a Supreme Court Judge.

The three positions fell vacant last month following the retirements of former Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga, his deputy, Justice Kalpana Rawal and Supreme Court Judge Justice Philip Tunoi.

The deadline for receiving the applications for the position of the Chief Justice was at 5.00pm July 8th 2016. For the positions of Deputy Chief Justice and Supreme Court Judge, applications closed on 6th July 2016 at 5.00pm. As at 5.00pm July 6th 2016, the Commission had received 15 applications for the position of the Deputy Chief Justice and 20 for the Supreme Court Judge position. As at 5.00pm today (July 8th 2016), the Commission has received 14 applications for the position of the Chief Justice.

“The JSC wishes to reiterate that in recruiting the Chief Justice, Deputy Chief Justice and Supreme Court Judge, the Commission will be strictly guided by constitutional principles and best practices, and shall conduct the exercise in a fair, just and transparent manner,” said Prof Margaret Kobia, the acting chair of the JSC.
