Three people, among them two chiefs, have been arrested in connection with the violent attack on employees of a company constructing the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) at Duka Moja area, Narok county on Tuesday.

During the attack, which was carried out by about 100 Maasai morans armed with crude weapons, 14 Chinese nationals and scores of other employees were injured.

Narok Police Commander Abdi Galgalo said the two administrators were arrested in Suswa area where they were in hiding yesterday morning, adding that more arrests would be made.

“The two are the brains behind the attack. It is said they incited youths to attack the camp where the company employees are housed,” he said.

He added that they would appear in court after investigations are completed, saying round the clock security would be provided to the China Road and Bridge Corporation employees.

On Wednesday, the Rift Valley Coordinator Wanyama Musiambo visited the camp and condemned the attack, vowing that those involved would bearrested and face the law.

He asked the locals to coexist peacefully with the management of the company, urging them to be guided by law whenever they have grievances with it.

Locals are demanding the company to employ them, accusing it of favouring people they call outsiders.

Galgalo said sleuths were hunting for other leaders of the gang, which also injured a K24 cameraman Jephita Mwai and damaged his camera.

The injured were treated at Narok Level Five Hospital. Ten Chinese workers, who were admitted for further treatment, have been discharged.

This is not the first time the Maasai youths have demonstrated against the Chinese company at the SGR site.

A few weeks ago, more than 300 youth staged a protest that was disrupted by the police.

Tension is high in the area as residents prepared to protest the arrests.
