 KIAMBU, Kenya

Women in Kiambu County have received training on how to win government tenders under a new campaign rolled out by three organisations to empower businesswomen. The Enablis Entrepreneurial Network East Africa, Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs and Investeq yesterday held the first Enablis Empowering Businesswomen to Win Government Tenders training in Thika.

Regional Director of Enablis East Africa Limited Fredrick Kariuki said the training is aimed at providing a level playing field for women in government tendering as they face significant barriers to winning public tenders. He said experience with affirmative programmes in Kenya and other countries, such as South Africa, indicate that often the targeted groups do not benefit from affirmative economic empowerment programmes.

“Some of the reasons include lack of skills and finance, peddling by influential persons who push their relatives/families against those that merit and window-dressing by putting a woman as the front for businesses owned by men, or a business owned by persons from another county,” he said.

The training, which runs until 28th March 2014, targets businesswomen who are interested in participating in public procurement following the amendment of the procurement law to provide for at least 30 percent of all the public procurement expenditure be reserved for the disadvantaged groups who include women, youth, and persons with disabilities, minorities and micro enterprises.

Kariuki said the programme targets 300 women across five counties of Kiambu, Machakos, Nakuru, Kisumu and Nairobi. Kiambu County Governor William Kabogo said the county government had many opportunities in the pipeline for businesswomen, such as refurbishment of old buildings, agribusiness and feeding programmes for the less fortunate among others.
