The Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) has opened investigations on Rumuruti police station OCS for allegedly taking bribes from pastoralists in the area. Mr David Cheruyiot was on Wednesday summoned by EACC officers in Nyeri following a voice recording in which he is heard allegedly soliciting for Ksh4000 from a herder in Laikipia County.
Mr Jackson Mue, EACC director in charge of central region, said his team is preparing a report on the claims and will forward it to the Director of Public Prosecutions in a few days. “We have received complains from pastoralists in Laikipia that one Mr David Cheroyiot was taking bribes from them,” he said, “we are almost done with the report and will forward to DPP for the case to be taken to the court of law.”
According to locals interviewed by Business Today, Mr Cheruyiot has been taking money from herders and arresting those who don’t meet his demands. The EACC, after receiving the complains from the residents, sent one of the herders in the area who said Mr Cheruyiot took away his farming equipment.
“We sent four officers to go and collect evidence that the said OCS was taking bribes. We have a voice recording. I cannot give details now because the matter is still under investigation,”.
Mr Cheriyot is also being accused by the locals for detaining their livestock with no reason.
