Raila holds talks with Uhuru at State House

CORD leaders are meeting President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House over the IEBC stalemate. The meeting, which was scheduled from 2pm, is expected to focus on resolving whether IEBC commissioners should be removed from office.

It will also determine whether Cord’s planned Madaraka Day rally in Uhuru Park will take place on Wednesday. The meeting initiated by the President will feature Cord members led by their co-principal, Raila Odinga and Moses Wetang’ula. Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is in China.

On Monday, the coalition filed a petition to be allowed to hold their rally. Justice George Odunga will hear the petition this afternoon.

Last week, Cord temporarily suspended demonstrations against the IEBC and issued a 10 day ultimatum for the government to respond to dialogue calls.

But the government ruled out the possibility of discussions with the opposition over the reconstitution of the electoral body. Uhuru said removal of IEBC officers can only be undertaken within the confines of the law. Cord wants IEBC commissioners out of office before the 2017 general elections.

Last Monday, three people died in Siaya and Kisumu following confrontations between police and protesters. Heads of foreign missions said Kenyans must take every opportunity for inclusive dialogue on the IEBC stalemate.
