Prof Olive Mugenda to drop bombshell as she leaves KU

Prof Olive Mugenda, one of Kenya’s longest serving university vice chancellors, has said she has no intention of staying in office beyond her term. But before she leaves, she will release names of government officials who owe he university millions of shillings.

She told members of the National Assembly’s Public Investments Committee (PIC) last week: “I am leaving. I don’t want to stay when my term comes to an end because that’s not good governance.”

There have been concerns about the delay in starting the process to replace the Kenyatta University Vice-Chancellor whose final term ends next March. Prof Mugenda also promised to name government officials who owe the university millions of shillings in unsurrendered imprest.

One week ago, PIC gave her up to Friday to present a list of individuals who may still be working in other government departments but have never surrendered a total of Sh29 million to the university.

The money dates back to as far as 1997.  Government officials who worked at Kenyatta University left for other departments and ministries without surrendering between Sh1.2 million and Sh4 million.

“We will furnish you with the list. If you look at what we have provided, the Ambassador/Permanent Delegate of Kenya to Unesco, Prof George Godia, is there,” she toldMPs.

Prof Mugenda was appointed VC in 2007 and was reappointed in 2012 by then President Mwai Kibaki for another five years.
