Nyeri Governor, Nderitu Gachagua has died at Royal Marsden Hospital in London while undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer, becoming the first governor to die while in office. The Governor, born on July 29, 1953, had traveled to London for treatment where he succumbed.

The family had earlier dispelled rumors of his death. According to his brother, Nderitu Gachagua died at 2.15 am Friday morning. Gachagua was Nyeri’s first Governor and was elected in 2013 on a GNU party ticket alongside deputy governor, Wamathai Samwel Githaiga.

According to his brother, Rigathi Gachagua, the governor died at 2.15am with close family members at his bedside. “He has left us after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer. It is very sad for the family but we have accepted God’s will,” he said.

He said arrangements are under way to bring the body back home for burial. Mr Rigathi called his brother’s death a huge loss to the family and urged Kenyans to pray for them.

Before becoming governor, he served as the Member of Parliament for Mathira constituency. He was married to Margaret Karungaru Nderitu.
