The battle for the digital TV subscriprion just got hotter as GOtv announced its plans to leverage on the coming Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament to beef up its subscriber base.
The firm which has been on an aggressive marketing campaign for its set top boxes since it drastically slashed its prices has teamed up with its sister firm, DSTV to air the full competition which will take part in Equitorial Guinea from January 16 to February 9.
Afcon is the biggest football event on the continent watched by millions of viewers across the continent.
“We are offering a dedicated Afcon channel, Supersport9 East, for GoTV Plus subscribers all over Kenya at no extra charge,” said Felix Kyengo, GOtv General Manager.
Mr Kyengo said the decision was part of the company’s strategy to make it the to-go- to platform for all rounded entertainment.
He said even though figures are not yet in, the recent recent set top boxes price cut to Ksh1,799 had earned the firm more subscribers. He added that he expects more customers to join the platform as the global June 17 switchover date apporoaches.
“Kenyans are always last minute people. So, we expect more people to buy our boxes are the D-day approaches, ” he said.
The full digital TV migration for viewers in Nairobi had been scheduled for Devember 31. However a consortium of the leading media houses rushed to court asking for more time to lay their infrastructure. The case is pending at the Supreme Court.
