The Director of Public Prosecutions has described the 22-year sentence for the six rapists of the 16-year-old girl known as Liz as “inordinately lenient and fails to adequately reflect the nature and gravity of and horrific circumstances under which the offences were committed and the magnitude of the harm suffered by the victim.”

Three of the six accused were found guilty of gang rape and causing bodily harm to Liz by Busia Chief Magistrate Margaret Wambani after trial period that lasted two years, dubbed “Justice for Liz’.

The verdict has stirred different reactions from the public, most of them feeling that Liz has finally found justice. However, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution has expressed dissatisfaction towards the ruling of that case and seeks to enhance the sentence.

The girl, popularly known to the public as ‘Liz’ (to hide her real identity), was gang raped two years ago by a group of six men three of whom are still at large in spite of the issuance of the warrants for their  arrest.

“I am disappointed to date three of the co-accused are still at large….In the circumstances my office shall seek to enhance the sentence as we continue to pursue the arrest of the other three culprits,” the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Keriako Tobiko, says. “
