Kenyan hip hop crew Camp Mulla has been nominated for this year’s BET Awards, becoming the first Kenyan group to participate in the prestigious urban award.
With over 32,500 fans on Facebook and over 21,800 followers on Twitter, the group has been nominated for Best International Act and will battle it out with Nigeria’s Wizkid and Ice Prince, South Africa’s Lira, Ghana’s Sarkodie as well as Mali’s Mokobe.
After honing their skills through a series of experimental projects and stealing the show with their recent performance at the Big Brother Africa TV Show in South Africa, Camp Mulla now look to add accolades to their Teeniez Group or Collabo and Teeniez Nu Artist awards they scooped on April this year, during the Chaguo La Teeniz Awards (CHAT) awards.
The hip hop sensation which is comprised of four members commonly known as Miss Karun, Mykie Toni, Shappaman and Taio Tripper who have diverse talents in songwriting, production, rapping and singing, is barely two years old in the music front.
It has stolen airwaves with ballads such as Party Don’t Stop in which they feature Collo, a member of the Kleptomanix Trio and has been used by Safaricom in its advertisement after doubling its internet speed, as well as Fresh All Day besides Hold It Down, whose video was shot in the streets of Nairobi during the night.
Started in 2001, BET Awards celebrates African Americans as well as those who have stolen the media in acting and other entertainment avenues for the past one year.
The July 1 award show will be hosted by Samuel L. Jackson of The Avengers, and will be held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, with Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj expected to perform according to New York Times.
