Key responsibilities & deliverables

We are seeking experienced journalists to join our Kenyan team as News Editors for www.tuko.co.ke. You must be able to demonstrate impeccable news judgment and a deep understanding of how the Kenyan news industry works.

Reporting to the Managing Editor – Kenya, the successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring, selecting and editing material from a range of both local and international news sources, including multimedia content.

Additionally, the News Editor will be required to:

Ensure timely processing of news material;

  • Follow breaking news and current affairs on a day-to-day basis;
  • Publish a daily target of high quality articles and ensure they readable and appeal to the target audience;
  • Verify facts and accuracy of all news reports before they are published;
  • Ensure articles have catchy headlines and appropriate photos or illustrations;
  • Utilize news sources like press releases, radio, television and web reports to generate articles;
  • Strictly follow an in-house guide to ensure articles meet journalistic standards.

Knowledge, skills and experience required:

  •  A university degree from a recognized institution;
  • Minimum four years’ experience as a full-time senior reporter or Editor (preferably in the online news field or a newspaper);
  • Excellent English skills (both written and spoken);
  • Ability to write and edit;
  • Understands how WordPress works;
  • Is able to effectively and creatively use social media to engage
    audiences;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Knowledge of online news production, packaging and dissemination techniques and methods;
  • Knowledge and understanding of laws, media laws and code of ethics, precedents, government regulations, and the democratic political process.

The individual;

  • Great personality, sense of humour, nose for news and creative enough to deliver an excellent article;
  • Analytical thinking with good conceptual skills;
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written;
  • Has a reliable network of news sources;
  • Excellent planning and organization skills.
