With two days to the much-awaited Obama visit to Kenya, two of Kenya’s leading TV personalities are staking their fame on interviewing the world’s most famous president.

NTV’s Larry Madowo and KTN’s Jeff Koinange have placed a bet of Ksh100,000 for whoever manages to interview US President Barack Obama. Their anxious fans are alread voting with their Facebook likes, tweets and online comments for their favourite talkshow hosts, with others roping in Citizen’s Julie Gichuru and Hussein Mohamed.

The abrasive Madowo, who hosts popular The Trend show on Friday night and the evermore influential and eloquent  Koinange bet Ksh100,000 on the Jeff Koinange Live show in April on who will interview Obama when he comes home to Kenya between July 24 and 26th.

The Kshs100, 000 would go to whoever gets the chance. “Whoever interviews Obama between you and I, takes the amount!” Jeff told Larry during the 16th April show. A total of Ksh123,000 has been pledged so far and Ksh20,000 would be added if neither of them gets the chance. The money will be channeled to charity work.

Larry and Jeff are arguably among the best television hosts in Kenya, thanks to their influential shows, although they are a world apart when it comes to personality, interviewing techniques and audience.

Jeff, a former CNN reporter and founding editor of K24 where he hosted Capital Talk interview ‘on the bench’, boasts high-profile connections in government (he is a friend to State House Spokesperson Manoah Esipisu) and could use that influence to reach out to Obama’s handlers.

He also has a strong personal profile having interviewed prominent personalities including presidents. Ms Julie Gichuru of Citizen too will be a force to reckon with, especially given her exposure to African presidents through her programme African Leadership Dialogue.

Larry Madowo is an energetic and aggressive young man and will rely on Nation Media Group’s networks to get Obama. The media house has a soft spot the government and could be rewarded with this most sought-after interview. But he will have to compete against his boss, Mr Linus Kaikai, who also is a great host.

Rumours have been flying already that White House has already chosen Jeff Koinange to interview President Obama, but nothing is confirmed yet.
