Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations kicked off today, with nearly one million candidates sitting the papers, but fears immediately emerged of massive leakage across the country.
Reports indicate that nearly all KCPE papers have been leaked together with their marking schemes, in what could compromise the integrity of the results, especially if majority of the pupils pass with higher grades that deviate from the normal performance trends over the years.
The recent KCSE exams were marred by cases of rampant cheating across the country. Massive cheating often leads to massive cancellation of exam results.

KCPE is a massive undertaking, with 937,467 candidates sitting for the examination, administered by 25,261 supervisors, 50,280 security officers, 58,215 invigilators and 7,451 examiners.
Heavy security has been deployed at various stations throughout the country to ensure the exams go on according to plan. The KCPE exams end on Thursday, November 12. The beef in security is also intended to give the candidates in ‘volatile’ areas an assurance of safety during the three day exam period. Along with security personnel, vehicles have also been added to ensure the distribution of the KCPE papers to the exam centres.
“We have mapped out all areas and we are working closely with sub-county education officers who are on the ground to ensure the success of the examination,”said Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) CEO Joseph Kivili.
