The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) commenced today with over 900,000 registered candidates sitting for the paper. While the number of candidates has notably increased from the previous year, there are a few unusual candidates who, despite the odds have decided to sit for the paper, to get that coveted certificate.
In Nyeri County, a 25-year-old mother of two is sitting for the examinations alongside her 13-year-old son, according to reports. Her education was cut short by her own father who opted to marry her off at age 12, but Lentana Stella Nasyiku, now 25 is determined to get an education.

“I was forced to drop out of school to be married off to any willing man. Indeed I got married and immediately got pregnant with my firstborn with whom I will be sitting the KCPE exams this year. I wish I could study all the way to the university,” she told Nation at Temple Road School, Nyeri.
Meanwhile a 72-year old former chief is also among the adults sitting for the KCPE exams. According to report from Kwale County, Asman Ruma, a Madrassa teacher and former chief aspires to pursue the dream to secondary school. “I missed the chance to fly out because I had no form four ualifications, something I regret up to this day,” he said.
Also, among many others, physically challenged Beatrice Cherotich (above) in Bungoma County is defying the odds to write the papers using her feet. Even without arms, she dreams of becoming a lawyer, inspired by her disability. The girl says she is confident that success is on her way. Her limitations and challenges are just but nature that will not stop her from achieving her dreams.
Finally, there is boy without arms trending on social media captured writing using his toes ahead of the examinations today. Talk of defying odds with the mentality, disability is not inability.
