Drama unfolded at Fred Obachi Machoka’s 50-year journalism celebration when he ordered his niece, a former Nominated Senator, Gloria Orwoba out of his event.
This was after Ms. Orwoba attempted to push “one term” agenda at the event that took place at the Nairobi’s Ulinzi Sports Complex on Saturday, October 11.
The veteran broadcaster in a video now circulating online warned his niece to stop “screwing up” his job.
“Please, security, remove this girl from this stage… Next time you are with your uncle, you will know you have no choice but to abide. Imagine you will go out,” he said.
Celebration recognized Mr. Obachi’s role in popularizing rhumba music through the Roga Roga radio and TV programme.
It also transformed to a platform to celebrate pioneer broadcasters, producers, and journalists who transitioned from early public broadcasting at the Voice of Kenya to modern private media, shaping the East African country’s national identity and preserving cultural heritage.
Media Council of Kenya (MCK) saluted all the trailblazers, noting that media legends ought to be honored during their life times.
“Fulfilling our mandate to promote high professional standards and recognise industry excellence, we joined stakeholders to honour 16 remarkable media veterans who have served for over three decades,” MCK said.
The occasion was meant to honour Obachi’s five decades of contribution to journalism.
“I am celebrating 50 Years because uou made it possible,” he said.
