Google Kenya today launched the Doodle 4 Google challenge to celebrate 50 years of independence for Kenya. The competition is open to all school-going children and teenagers aged between six and 18 years to come up with a doodle on the theme “My Kenya”.

Doodles are spontaneous and exciting changes made to the Google logo and have long been a part of life at Google, the search engine giant. This is a chance for the winning student’s artwork to be displayed on the Google homepage. Young artists are challenged to create a doodle around the theme “My Kenya” that is inspired by Kenya’s Jubilee year, a celebration of 50 years since independence.

The judges will look for designs that capture the spirit of the theme and that show artistic merit and creativity. The panel of judges will include, Juliani, Churchill, Caroline Mutoko and Farzana Khubchandani, Google Kenya’s head of marketing. The competition starts today and submissions should be posted by June 14, 2013.

The winner will be announced on July 26 and the winning doodle will be displayed on the Google Kenya homepage for 24hours in August 2013. Students can visit the competition website at www.google.co.ke/doodle4google for the full content rules, important dates and to download all materials related to the contest entry and doodle submissions. The winner will get Kshs800,000 worth of school fees, a Kshs800,000 technology equipment grant for his or her school and will have their doodle displayed on the Google Kenya homepage (www.google.co.ke).

An Android tablet device will be the prize for the teacher involved. “This is a chance for us to celebrate Kenya’s Jubilee year and see Kenya through the eyes of the next generation who will shape our country. It is also a wonderful opportunity to showcase young creators’ artwork on the Google Kenya homepage, viewed by millions everyday,” said Ms Khubchandani.

Google has had the opportunity to celebrate significant local heroes and events with doodles commemorating figures such as Wangari Maathai and events ranging from Kenya’s independence day to the wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara. The Doodle 4 Google will be the first nationwide drawing competition by Google inviting young artists from around the country to design their own Google logo inspired by the theme, ‘My Kenya’,” said.
