Residents of Usenge in Siaya County say the ongoing bridge construction across River Yala has renewed hope in an area that has for years been cut off by floods and poor access.
The residents said works on the river channel to allow more water to pass, the construction of the bridge itself and a temporary access road for motorbike users have already improved movement across the river.
According to locals, the project marks a major change for a community that had almost given up after years of repeated flooding disrupted transport, business and farming activities.
Businesspeople say they suffered losses whenever movement became difficult, particularly during heavy rains when River Yala overflowed into Lake Victoria and submerged the road linking the two sides of Usenge.
In the past, traders were often forced to use boats to cross the flooded section, while some residents relocated from their homes and abandoned their farms when floodwaters rose.
Daniel Omondi, a Usenge resident and boda boda rider, said the floods had made even emergency travel difficult.
“We had a problem with flooding here. You couldn’t cross even when you are carrying a sick person to hospital. This river has previously swept away people. But now things are good and once it’s complete, we shall see the difference. After five years I think we’ll have a difference,” Omondi said.
Residents believe completion of the bridge will improve connectivity, reduce transport challenges and support the growth of local businesses.
They also expressed optimism that better infrastructure could attract new investments to the area, including fish-processing facilities, housing developments and other commercial ventures.
For many residents, the bridge is seen not only as a transport project but also as a long-term solution to the isolation that has affected Usenge whenever flooding occurred.
The construction works are continuing, with residents saying they are already seeing signs of economic activity returning as access improves.
