The government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding critical transport infrastructure with the revival of the Dhogoye Bridge project in Usenge, Siaya County, saying the crossing will improve connectivity, boost regional trade and support economic growth in western Kenya.
The bridge, being constructed by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), is expected to restore a vital transport link between Siaya and Busia counties along the Bondo–Usenge–Osieko corridor.
For years, residents living along the route have faced repeated disruptions after rising waters from Lake Victoria submerged the crossing point, cutting off access to markets, schools, health facilities and other essential services.
According to the government, the project, which commenced in 2021, experienced a prolonged halt before being revived. Construction has now proceeded uninterrupted over the past four months, with significant progress recorded on site.
Once completed, the Dhogoye Bridge will provide an all-weather crossing, ensuring uninterrupted movement of people and goods regardless of seasonal flooding.
The government said the bridge is expected to ease transport challenges, facilitate trade between the neighbouring counties and strengthen social and economic integration among communities around the Lake Victoria basin.
“The Government continues to invest in critical transport infrastructure to strengthen connectivity, unlock trade opportunities and support economic growth across the country,” the statement said.
Officials noted that improved road infrastructure is expected to lower transport costs, improve access to public services and create new economic opportunities for farmers, traders and businesses that rely on the route.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration said it has played a key role in keeping the project on course by coordinating government agencies, local leaders and communities.
According to the department, the collaboration has helped resolve operational challenges that previously delayed construction while ensuring a conducive environment for continuous implementation of the long-awaited infrastructure project.
The government expressed confidence that completion of the bridge will transform transport along the corridor and enhance economic activity between Siaya and Busia counties by providing a reliable crossing throughout the year.
