Police reshuffle as IG Boinnet announces digital services launch date

New police officers will take command over Kenya’s regions after Inspector General Joseph Boinett named eight new commanders in a restructuring of the force.

The new regional police commanders include Marcus Ochola who will command the Coast region, as well as Eunice Kihiko who will head the Eastern region.

Central region will be commanded by Judy Lamet with Philip Ndolo in charge of police operations in Nairobi region.

Edward Mwamburi goes to Rift Valley, Paul Soi in the North-Eastern region and Rashid Yakub who will be in charge of the Western region.

Vincent Makohkha, who recently attained a doctorate degree, will head Nyanza region. 

“These officers will take full charge of police operations in the regions I have mentioned,” said Boinnet.

The appointment of the new regional commanders, according to IG Boinett, reflects gender and regional piety, “as you can see.”

“Do not ask me questions about gender balance,” Boinnet told members of the press.

The Inspector General also said that alongside age, a key factor of consideration in the appointment of the new commanders was their experience in the police force.

“Most importantly was their service records; the length of their service and experience,” he said.

The police boss also said that within the month, the country should expect an announcement on new County commanders.

Predecessors to the new commanders “have been recalled from the Kenya Police and Administration Police” and will retain their ranks as well as be redeployed. “None has lost their job.”

IG Boinnet added that the journey towards the full digitisation of police processes, services and procedures will be launched on January 7.

The launch will take place at the Kilifi County Commander’s offices and will be presided over by the Cabinet Secretary Interior Fred Matiang’i.

“We want to migrate from the old way of doing things … into totally digital platforms.”

The police boss mentioned personnel management, administrative systems and processes as well as the occurence book (OB).
