Planning Systems Services, the architectural firm behind many of Nairobi’s most iconic buildings, this week confirmed the death of Jim Archer, who was its founding partner. He was 84 years old. Archer is a celebrated architect who was central to the design of several buildings in the city.

I&M Bank Tower

Archer designed the I&M Bank Tower building in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD). The commercial building opened its doors in 1987 and is considered a landmark and a well-known part of the city skyline.

The skyscraper was designed and constructed by Archer’s Planning System Services and Laxmanbhai Construction LTD.

Lonrho House

Lonrho House is another famous location in the Nairobi Central Business District designed by Archer. Located along Standard Street, it hosts various office buildings and businesses including Capital FM.

It was opened in 1990. It has 20 floors, exterior glass panels to allow natural light and retail spaces on the ground floor.

Rahimtulla Tower

Also known as the Rahimtulla Trust Building, Rahimtulla Towers is located in Upperhill, Nairobi – a commercial hub. The twenty-two storey structure designed by Archer is one of the country’s tallest buildings, and includes two basement floors.

Braeburn School

Planning Systems was also responsible for the design of Braeburn School. The building houses several different facilities within the international school.
