Leading mobile operator Safaricom has clarified allegations that the institution is regionally biased on how it rewards winners of various promotions including in the ongoing Shangwe Mtaani.

There have been allegations that the company favours people from the Kikuyu ethnic extraction.  One list has been going round on social media showing that the promotion in various regions in won mostly by Kikuyu participants.

“To be honest,” Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore said in an interview, “some groups participate more than others in the promotions.  We also try to balance the awards, the rest said on social media is not true.”

Bonyeza Ushinde, its previous promotion, faced similar allegations as members of this community bagged most wins. “We made a mistake with North Eastern region but was corrected as soon as possible. But the rest of lists and names circulating on social media are made by the same people circulating them,” he told Business Today.

Mr Collymore said Safaricom does not condone corruption and warned that the mobile firm won’t do business with corrupt organisations and individuals. Speaking during the launch of Safaricom true value report on Thursday, he said Kenyan economy loses close to Ksh20 billion a year through corrupt deals.

“I would blacklist any corrupt companies seeking to partner with us. No corrupt directors would set foot at our organisation,” he said.

Corruption continues to threaten the Kenyan economy and the CEO applauded the steps taken by the government to help curb corruption. “We believe there are processes already in place to curb corruption in the country,” he added.
