President Uhuru Kenyatta has opened himself to ridicule and criticism after he went public yesterday to clarify that he is not in love with Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru in what also complicates their working relationship in government.

Uhuru said he has one wife and people should not force another one on him, rekindling a similar situation that President Kibaki found himself in when he was forced by his wife, Lucy, to clarify that Mary Wambui, with whom it was rumoured they had a child, was not his wife.

“There are those who keep on making wild allegations claiming that Waiguru is whatever to me, or so many other things, but I have mine and I don’t need another one,” said Uhuru in response to widespread talk that his soft spot for Ms Waiguru emanates from a personal relationship they have.

NO HARD FEELINGS: President Uhuru’s wife, Margaret (right), shakes hands with Ms Waiguru. Both look jovial at meeting.

Public relations experts say the President should have ignored the issue and let it pass, arguing that denying rumours will fuel the topic and turn him into a target of ridicule. “You saw how the issue backfired on Kibaki,” said a PR practitioner who works with politicians based in Nairobi. “He has stooped so low as to respond to bar room talk.”

Others, however, feel by talking about it, the issue will now die out as the room for speculation is now empty. “Give it a week and you won’t here about it,” said a PR lady who requested not to be named as she consults the government. “Real men are bold and Uhuru has turned out to be one of them.”

Even then, tongues are still wagging. As Uhuru said this, the Director of Public Prosecutions issued his statement on the NYS scandal, under Ms Waiguru’s ministry, in which he recommended prosecution of PS Peter Mangiti while the CS will be taken as a witness.

Addressing residents of Eldoret during a stopover, he caused laughter from the crowd when he said those still looking for more wives should do so without spreading lies about him, writes the Star. Uhuru said those who have proof of corruption against Ms Waiguru or any other minister should forward the evidence and action will be taken by the government, “regardless of whoever it is.”

So what’s the connection?

Kenyatta says the matter of the issue of the suspended ministers or any other ministers in government is his prerogative and no one will coerce him to either sack or reinstate CSs. “I did not consult them when I appointed the ministers and will make my own decision not based on the noise by some people,” said Kenyatta when he addressed leaders from the North Rift region during a meeting at the Eldoret State Lodge on Sunday.

Now that the President has clarified that she is not his girlfriend, the question that remains begging in many Kenyans minds is, Who is she to Uhuru?
