Canon, a world leader in imaging solutions, has announced the winners of its first ever national photography competition in Kenya. With 679 participants and 1,358 entries based on the ‘Power to Inspire’ theme, the grand prizes were awarded to Minal Peshavaria for her photo of wildebeests against a background of a sunset and Hellen Kinuthia for her photo of daughter and mother crossing a road during a storm.

The Canon photography competition encouraged photographers of all abilities to submit an image that portrayed an element of inspiration for a chance to win an all expenses paid, three-day photography workshop with world renowned photographers and Canon ambassadors – Jonathan and Angela Scott – at Maasai Mara. “Canon is committed to supporting photography in the region and making it accessible to all. The quality of imagery submitted was very high and demonstrated the entrants’ photographic skills, with many of the entries managing to capture the essence of the theme in a split second shot. Canon’s competition has inspired the imagination and creativity of hundreds of passionate photographers from across the African region, and enabled them to utilise the power of image to capture subtle elements that can inspire an individual,” said Somesh Adukia, Sales Director, Canon Middle East. The competition was organised by OTL, Canon’s partner in Kenya and was also supported by Photographers Association of Kenya (PAK).

The quality of entries from across the region made the judging process difficult for the independent panel of experts, which consisted of well known photographers. “While congratulating our winners, we would also like to recognise other talented photographers who submitted images to make this competition a real success. As the brand that revolutionised consumer DSLR photography, we are thrilled to see how much photographic talent the African region is producing,” added Adukia.

“Canon empowers creativity and wants everyone to be passionate about the power of image and the emotions that it can evoke. Visual imagery has – and always will – play a key role in how we perceive the world,” said Basil Serrao, Marketing Director, Office Technologies. “We are proud to help local grass root talent to share their vision through the realm of photography. In recent years, we have seen some amazingly talented women come to the fore in these creative fields, and we hope to inspire even more to do the same in the years to come.”
