MOSCOW – The chief executive of French oil company Total Mr Christophe de Margerie is dead. Margerie, 63, died in an air crash in Moscow after his jet hit a snow plough and was engulfed in flames. Four other occupants of the jet also died. According to Russian investigators, the snow plough’s driver was drunk.
Mr de Margerie has been at the helm of Total, Europe’s third largest oil company since 2007. Friends, colleagues and family members have started pouring praises and messages of condolences to his family. A statement from French President Francois Hollande’s office said: “Christophe de Margerie dedicated his life to French industry and to building up the Total group.
He made it into one of the very top global companies. “Francois Hollande cherished Christophe de Margerie’s independent character, original personality and his devotion to his country.” The deceased joined Total Group after graduating from the Ecole Superieure de Commerce in Paris in 1974 and has been at the company since then, earning the nickname ‘Big Moustache.’
