In the next few days, the short rains period will commence.

According to the Meteorological Department, “predictions are that the enhanced rainfall will reach the strongest levels ever seen in the last four decades as the world heads into the El Nino season.” The higher-than usual rains are expected to continue through to December. Kenya government agencies have scrambled to plan ahead.

It is important to take precautions for your residence. Measures taken should include physical inspection of the facilities and equipment in the compound to address weak
areas.

Check on the roof for leaks. Replace worn out roofing. Fix the gutters if damaged. Clear drainage of any clutter so that flood waters do not stagnate in the compound.

Check the electrical and other fittings. If possible, install voltage guards against unstable electric voltage.

Stock up on food and other essentials. Floods may cut off road networks disrupting essential supplies.

The risk to overall security needs to be considered. In the event of an electrical malfunction, damage to electrical equipment is possible. Ensure to guard against voltage disruptions. For security and other equipment, ensure you have other power sources to keep the equipment functioning optimally.

Heavy rains tend to bring down walls (including perimeter walls). They may hamper optimal performance of electric fences. Check to address any malfunctions and fortify weak areas.
