Bomet Governor Isaac Rutto stole as much as Ksh700 million from public coffers for personal gain, News24Kenya online reports, quoting Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) report on corruption states. The EACC report, which News24 says has accuses the Bomet Governor of purchasing property worth close to Ksh750 million in the last few months.

It accuses him of buying heavy machinery such as 40 earth movers, tippers and graders worth approximately KES 400 million. He also bought a helicopter worth Ksh300 million and a palatial home in Ngong town worth Ksh33 million all in a very short period of time according to the EACC.

It is alleged that he owns a series of petrol stations in the country. Rutto has already said that he will not quit office despite being named in the report, because he is an elected official.

“There is a difference between an elected official and an appointed one. We Governors are elected officials. We do not just resign,” he said of the pressure from president Uhuru Kenyatta to step aside from office until investigations by the EACC are complete.

Rutto is among 17 Governors that have been named in the report and whether he will step aside remains to be seen.
