NAIROBI, Kenya
Nokia has launched its newest mobile phone application, Nokia Life, which aims to inform and empower its consumers through involvement of partners like government and NGOs by focusing on key aspects of their lives such as health, education, entertainment, spirituality and agriculture.
Nokia Life, launched by Information PS Dr Bitange Ndemo, is pre-installed in the Nokia mobile phones. It also offers a one-click access and has concise feeds and customised filters, the company said. Consumers have been offered a 30-day free trial. Phone users on Safaricom and Airtel can access the information by sending an SMS to the number 110.
The application has also been customized and is also available in the Swahili. Nokia has also partnered with Plan Kenya to improve child rights and childhood care. The application offers a focus on health to assist mothers on how best to bring up their children and how those expecting can take care of themselves during the pregnancy and delivery thus reducing the high mortality rates experienced by mothers.
Plan Kenya’s Country Director Samuel Musyoki pointed out that the partnership would also focus on making it easier for mothers to register their births. This will target those in remote areas who may not have easy access to hospitals to process the birth registration for their children.
Dr Ndemo said the application provides more employment opportunities as it encourages development of content and called for youth to get innovative and create localised applications that make dissemination of data much more efficient. Nokia’s Bruce Howe said there is revenue shared agreement across all partners.
