This year’s Kenya primary school ball games have received a sponsorship worth Kshs5 million from a leading beverage maker. Nestle Kenya, through its leading Milo brand, announced the sponsorship yesterday at a function held at the Norfolk Hotel, Nairobi.

The sponsorship package, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association (KPSSA), will cover the provision of playing kits to participating teams, track suits to games officials, balls, trophies, medals, certificates, and T-shirts among other items. Ms Svetlana Obruchkova, Managing Director, Nestle Kenya, said the MILO sponsorship for the upcoming Kenya Primary National Ball games will go towards the development of sport in primary schools.

“As a company, we believe that sport plays a part in setting the foundation for a child’s future. It is through participating in sports that children learn how to persevere, find courage, overcome challenges, engage in team work and believe in one-self,” she said.

The Nestle MD added that the MILO partnership underscored the brand’s commitment to sporting activities that teach positive values, shaping children into well-grounded adults of the future. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Enos Oyaya said his ministry’s ultimate vision is to help identify and nurture talent right from the grassroots through to the national primary school games.

“As a Ministry, we place very strong emphasis on the development of sports. We believe that sporting activities play a pivotal role in complementing the formal curriculum and the national goals of education,” he added. This year’s national ball games will bring together a total of 1,400 boys and girls from across the 47 counties and are scheduled to take place in Bungoma this month from June 19th to 21st.

The games, which earlier kicked off at the districts, will now be staged regionally. The regions are Nairobi Metropolitan Region, Lake region, Nakuru region, Mombasa region, Aberdares region, Nzoia region, Garissa region and Northern region.
