Nakumatt enters Tanzania market with Moshi branch

MOSHI, Friday Dec. 09 – Regional retailer, Nakumatt Holdings, will tomorro morning officially open the doors to its latest outlet in the East Africa region, in the Tanzanian town of Moshi. The opening of the US$ 1.3million Nakumatt Moshi supermarket at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro now pushes Nakumatt’s branch tally to 35 branches across Tanzania, Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda and enhances the firm’s positioning as the leading East Africa retailer.

Speaking ahead of the opening of the new store, Nakumatt Holdings Managing Director Mr. Atul Shah disclosed that the firm is sparing no effort to ensure a full East Africa coverage by opening a branch in Burundi within the next two years ahead of a scheduled pan African expansion bid. Beyond East Africa, Nakumatt Holdings has confirmed plans to enter other key markets within the Southern Africa, Western and Horn of Africa regions as part of its next growth phase in the next five years as part of its Nakumatt 2.0 corporate strategy.

Covering a 34,000sq feet shopping floor space, the new Nakumatt Moshi Supermarket is the first branch on Tanzania soil with four other branches currently under consideration in key Tanzania markets such as Dar es salaam and Arusha in coming months. “Nakumatt Holdings is actively exploring options for a store in Burundi to ensure that we fully cover East Africa before setting off on the Nakumatt 2.0 journey which involves registering a Pan African presence,” Shah said.

And added: “the opening of Nakumatt Moshi now sets the stage for further branch openings in Dar-Es Salaam and Arusha in coming months.” Sitting at the foot of Mt Kilimanjaro, Moshi town is an important economic hub in Tanzania enjoying a high sit on the country’s tourism front. Moshi town is also a coffee producing area with a high disposable income to support a world class retailer.

At the current growth rate, Nakumatt Team Leader Shah explained that the firm is on course to activate its second growth phase in a project code named Nakumatt 2.0 that will focus on pan Africa expansion.

“Through a project code named Nakumatt 2.0, we have now embarked on a feasibility study to facilitate our entry to such countries as Burundi, Zambia, South Sudan, DRC, Nigeria, Botswana and Malawi,” Shah explained.

Nakumatt Holdings has steadily grown its regional presence geared at fostering regional development with new branches now open in Kampala and Kigali. The firm’s expansion bid in East Africa is also geared at deepening retail services provision in East Africa.
