Legendary Nigerian Actor Olu Jacobs Dies at 84

Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Olu Jacobs has died at the age of 84, his family announced on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

Jacobs, whose full name was Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, was one of the most recognizable figures in Nigeria’s theatre, television and film industries. His career spanned more than five decades, beginning with work in British television and international productions before he became a prominent figure in Nollywood.

His son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced the death in a statement shared on social media. The family described him as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, referring to him as “The Lion of Lufodo.” They also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect the family’s privacy as they mourn.

Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and went on to become a celebrated actor across stage, television and film. He received numerous honors during his career, including Nigeria’s national honor of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic.

Jacobs’ death comes after years in which false reports of his passing repeatedly circulated online. His family had publicly dismissed similar rumors as recently as 2024.
