NAIROBI, Kenya

Gor Mahia will be slapped with a huge damage fine of over Sh2.1 million over the Sunday damage of the Kasarani stadium facilities. The club’s fans uprooted seats on Sunday and damaged other facilities in the wake of their 0-0 draw against Nairobi City Stars in a Tusker Premier League match.

Sports Stadia and Management Board (SSMB) Public Relations Officer Rakki Asman Monday told Daily Nation that a total of 600 seats valued at Sh3,500 each were destroyed and that they will forward the costs to the club. “The costs is bound to be higher , approximately 600 seats were damaged. Each seat costs Sh3,500 to fabricate and they have to be imported from China,” he said.

Rakki said that apart from the seats, lighting boxes as well as flower beds were destroyed. He added that they are yet to have a formal meeting to map out the total costs of the damage but said that Gor will have to foot the total cost of the purchase of the new seats as well as the labour charges which could swell to close to Sh3 million. The fabrication of the seats alone is set to cost Sh2.1 million.

“This is a sad occurrence. We are trying to correct the mess in readiness for military games which begins Wednesday but once we have resolved the issue, we will be writing to Gor Mahia.” Gor has made news for all the wrong reasons in the past together with their eternal rivals AFC Leopards over fan instigated violence.

Both have been in several occasions slapped with fines and banned from using the SSMB facilities. Leopards for instance were fined Sh245,000 in March this year after their fans vandalized seats at the same facility. The stadium was last year renovated by a Chinese firm to a tune of Sh1 billion.
