A fresh wave of riots has erupted at Moi University as students continue protesting against the rape and murder of a third year student in unclear circumstances.

All roads around the university have been blocked as the students seek audience from the university administration following the rape and murder of Charity Maina, who was killed on her way to hostel from the library on Saturday night.

The students have said they will not resume classes until the university administration takes matters of security seriously within and outside the campus, where most students under Private-Sponsored Students Programme (PSSP) reside while at the university. “There is no going back in the quest for justice for Charity. The university has been sleeping on this matter and we won’t resume classes unless proper security measures are installed,” vowed a student from the university.

So far two suspects have been arrested and are being interrogated over the rape and murder of the third year student who was pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. The university’s Vice Chancellor Prof Richard Mibey was quoted in the dailies saying police will leave no stone unturned, urging the students to remain calm over the issue.

Moi University has had a spate of insecurity issues in the past. A machete-armed man who was tormenting the students a few years ago has never been captured. Popularly known as Mashoka, the goon used to attack students at night by chopping off meat from their bodies, something that left students in fear. He remains a mystery to the university.
