More than 8,000 lawyers will offer free legal services to the public countrywide from Monday September 26th to September 30th. Law Society of Kenya Secretary/CEO Mercy Wambua said that the lawyers (with valid practising certificates) will offer the free services during the LSK Legal Awareness Week.

Ms Wambua said the lawyers will also offer the pro bono (free legal services) to prisoners and remandees in Nairobi prisons between September 27th and 30th. The LSK CEO said the Legal Awareness Week will be launched on Monday 26th September at Milimani Law Courts Parking Yard – Nairobi at 9am under the theme Improving Access to Justice through Alternative Dispute Resolution.

“LSK has a mandate to advise and assist members of the legal profession, government and the public in all matters relating to the administration of justice in Kenya,” Ms. Wambua said.

She said that many citizens still cannot access justice despite provisions of Article 48 of the Constitution that guarantees every Kenyan the right of access to justice on an equal basis.

Ms Wambua urged the public countrywide to turn up and benefit from legal services on land, succession, family, human rights, alternate dispute resolution and accident compensation among others.

The lawyers will be stationed at the Milimani Law Courts Parking Yard (Nairobi) and courts in Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Bungoma, Kakamega and Busia. Others will be at law courts in Migori, Nyamira, Kisii, Homabay, Embu, Kerugoya, Nyeri, Nanyuki, Chuka, Machakos and Huruma Grounds (Eldoret).

The lawyers will also be at Kamiti Maximum Prison (Tuesday 27th September), Industrial Area Remand Prison (Wednesday 28th September), Lang’ata Women Prison (Thursday 29th September) and Nairobi Remand on Friday 30thSeptember. The objective of the Legal Awareness Week is to promote the mandate of the Law Society of Kenya by extending legal literacy and awareness to members of the public through provision of free legal advice.

The LSK CEO said that several other organizations involved in legal work will also be present to showcase their services towards promoting better public understanding of the role lawyers play in the advancement of legal literacy and advocacy.#Wakilibilamalipo
