Former Housing minister Soita Shitanda is dead.
Shitanda passed on today at 2pm at Nairobi Hospital where he had been admitted in critical condition. He served as Malava MP between 1997 when he ousted the then Health minister Joshua Angatia until March 2013.
He has been suffering ill health since 2009 and was admitted to hospital several times after collapsing. He is said to have been suffering from diabetes. Mr Shitanda was admitted at the Nairobi Hospital’s ICU early last week but was moved to the normal ward at the weekend.
After the 2002 elections, President Mwai Kibaki appointed him as an assistant minister in the office of the president, before he was appointed minister for Housing in a cabinet reshuffle in 2005 following the government defeat in a constitutional referendum, a position he retained after the 2007 polls.
In the 2013 elections, he was defeated by former Planning minister Wycliffe Oparanya in the race for the Kakamega governor’s seat.
Last year, President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed him the chairman of the Agricultural Development Corporation, a position he was serving in until his death.
