The initiative launched by the CORD coalition leader Raila Odinga yesterday has so far received Ksh100,409 from the public through a mobile money account created to raise funds for striking teachers
Mobile operator Safaricom says the M-Pesa account dubbed ‘Solidarity Account’ had raised that amount as at 12.30 pm today, Business Daily reports. Mr Odinga announced he had deposited Ksh100,000 in the M-Pesa account, meaning only Ksh406 had been donated.
The initiative comes after several successful mobile-based fundraising campaigns. Kenyans in August raised Ksh6.1 million through mobile money to help Emmanuel Jadudi undergo a brain tumor surgery in India.
More than Ksh664 million was raised in 2011 in a fundraiser dubbed ‘Kenyans for Kenya’ to provide food supplies and long-term solutions to famine that had ravaged the Turkana region and northern Kenya.
The M-Pesa paybill number 672672 for Solidarity Account was registered on September 23, 2015 by opposition party ODM through its executive director Oduor Ong’wen, records from Safaricom show.
Funds raised through the mobile platform will be given to teachers who may not receive their September salaries, said the opposition coalition.
