NAIROBI, Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012 – BUSINESS TODAY Reproduces the statement by Barclays Board sent to the media after the appointment was announced.

MR ADAN MOHAMED’S CANDIDATURE FOR THE POSITION OF KRA COMMISSIONER GENERAL

The Board of Barclays of Kenya has received confirmation that the Minister for Finance has on the recommendation of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Board appointed Mr. John Njiraini as the new Commissioner General. The Board and Mr. Mohamed in particular take this opportunity to congratulate the new Commissioner General and to wish him well.

Following enquiries made to the Bank, the Board wishes to confirm that Mr Mohamed’s application for the position of Commissioner General followed internal consultations with the Board and Barclays Plc.

Notwithstanding that the Bank considers Mr Mohamed highly valuable and pivotal in the continued growth of the Bank’s business in East and West Africa, the Bank supported Mr Mohamed’s offer to serve in the public service on the basis that such a step was not only in fulfillment of an honourable civic duty but also a positive development for the Country in the new dispensation.

The Board noted with appreciation that Mr. Mohamed has in the past been offered the chance to serve as a member of National Economic Social Council which gave birth to Vision 2030; as Chairman, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology; and as a member of the Capital Markets Tribunal.

Following the decision of the KRA Board, Mr Mohamed has accepted the decision with grace and wishes to thank the KRA Board for the courteous manner in which it treated him during the interview.
