Journalist Ann Ngugi, known for her mastery of Kiswahili, is back on the silver-screen after a long break. The former KTN and K24 Swahili anchor has joined Christian TV station, MBCI TV, where she debuted on Monday at 8pm on Kiswahili news programme, Jamvi La MBCI.
Her return to TV journalism comes barely two months after she sensationally revealed how she was unceremoniously fired from K24, the TV station by the Kenyatta family’s Mediamax Ltd, when she was five months pregnant with twins – whom she later named Princess and Precious. Her revelation and the challenges that followed shocked many of her fans and Kenyans in general.
The sacking came seven months after being poached from KTN, where she reported and anchored in Kiswahili. She has been doing freelance feature stories until her return aboard MBCI TV.
Speaking to Japanni Masawe of Radio Jambo, she revealed how she had to “move from Hurlingham where we were staying with my family and go somewhere else” so as to survive on a low budget despite her celebrity status.
She was to sell a Mercedes Benz because the family couldn’t maintain and wanted to use the money to pay rent but the money was not enough and they were forced to go live out of the city. “I did not give up despite the problems I was facing. I managed to maintain my children’s lifestyle.” She took to taking matatus to move around.
However, Lady Luck appears to have finally smiled on her. Her return was first announced on social media by the TV station.
