Kenya’s first donkey slaughter house has finally been opened in Mogotio, Baringo County. That could signal the end to the illegal donkey meat business that has been thriving in areas such as Naivasha where another abattoir is set to commence operations.
It will also stimulate business in donkeys and increase the commercial value of an animal often referred to as beast of burden. Photos posted on Facebook show several donkeys awaiting slaughter in a clean slaughter house with staff wearing well laundered coats.
The abattoir, which was licenced by Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett, belongs to Goldox (K) Ltd, and is set to venture into the export market.
“Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries declares the Goldox (K) Limited Donkey Abattoir an export slaughterhouse for the purposes of these regulations, with effect from the April 1, 2016,” said the CS in a notice.
The slaughter house at Chemogoch in Mogotio was put up at a cost of Ksh300 million by Chinese nationals Lu Jing and Lu Donglin and has a capacity to process 100 donkeys per day.
