Nation Media Group has fought back to retain Sunday Nation writer Justus Wanga who had been given an offer by Standard. Sources at NGM said Nation countered the offer by raising Wanga’s salary above what its rival had given him.

Justus Wanga, who writes politics for Sunday Nation, was set to move to Mombasa Road from July 1st this year after accepting an offer by Kenya’s second largest newspaper in terms of circulation and even signing his employment letter.

Mr Wanga had been given permanent employment and was serving notice when he was given a counter-offer. His exit would have been a blow to the Sunday Nation, which has lately been trying to build a team of new writers who include Wanjohi Githae and Kipchumba Some.

So it’s back to the drawing board for Standard, which is likely to find another catch from the twin-towers. The Standard weekend team, depleted by last year’s restructuring that pushed out a good number of its strong political writers, had hoped to get a sweet at Nation, which recently snatched Some, an investigative writer.

Meanwhile, the nation Business Desk has lost Lilian Ochieng, who recently joined the Kenya Revenue Authority. At KRA, Lilian has joined the communications department where she will lead the taxman’s media and public relations.
