Solarcentury, the solar power firm, has announced a major partnership with London Distillers. Solarcentury will construct one of the largest solar roof projects in East Africa for the liquor maker.

Speaking at the signing ceremony on Friday, director of Solarcentury East Africa, Guy Lawrence said: “We are excited to be delivering the largest commercial rooftop solar system in East Africa. This solar investment makes London Distillers a pioneer company in the manufacturing sector and also demonstrates a genuine commitment to reducing its environmental impact,” he said.

Solarcentury will design the solar hybrid system to operate in parallel with the national grid, or the diesel generator in the event of power outage. Reducing its reliance on diesel and grid energy will significantly cut London Distillers’ energy expenditure and offset 335 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.

The chairman of London Distillers Mohan Galot said the company is seeking to protect the environment and save energy costs.

“We are always looking for ways to improve the cost efficiency of our operations and the environment, and investing in solar presented us with a solution for both these ambitions. Being able to power the whole building using solar electricity during the day is very impressive- we are saving money and helping environment,” he said.

London Distillers will enjoy its solar electricity for the lifetime of the plant after six years payment duration, a cost reduction of up to 130,000 dollars per year. Despite being the first manufacturing organisation in Kenya to invest in solar technology, it has also installed a large biogas plant in its distillery to improve the company’s environmental impact.
