Laikipia University main campus was re-opened on Tuesday May 3rd, 2016. The university was closed on April 12th by the senate following student unrest.
Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science and Technology) & Bachelor of Science (Biochemistry) students who rioted claiming that the two courses are not registered have each been fined Ksh5, 500 to meet the cost of general damages caused during the disturbances.
According to a letter from the Office of the Registrar of Academics, first, second and fourth year classes resumed on 4th May 2016 and all students were expected to register at the University Main Gate with Service Access Cards. “1st, 2nd and 4th year classes commence on 4th May for all students who have signed the nominal roll,” read the letter in part.
The Ministry of Higher Education is yet to comment on the legality of the disputed courses. The University has however been offering the same courses since 2013. Reports from the university indicated that there had been rumours within the campus over the status of the two courses which escalated into riots.
Meanwhile, all the third-year students who have paid for teaching practice (TP)/industrial attachment are advised to collect log books from the university as they embark on their industrial attachments.
