Standard Group’s second phase of lay-off entered its second day today with more journalists being declared redundant, as the company targets to chip away 90 journalists from its newsroom.
It was a sombre mood at the company’s Mombasa Road offices where a panel of editors constituted to deliver the bad news continued its sittings, as journalists came to terms with the reality of losing their cherished jobs.
Some of the latest victims of the massive lay-off that kicked off on Friday include former Nation journalists Mwaura Samora, who wrote for The Narobian and Carol Rwenji, who reported for the Standard newspaper. Others who have been shown the door include Nicholas Waitathu, a reporter on the business desk.

The Standard newspaper Sports desk also lost Joel Odidi, a sub-editor in the restructuring. The news desk has suffered another blow with the exit of Geoffrey Mosoku, a key political writer. Mosoku, who was poached from the Star, is said to be planning to sue the company for wrongful dismissal.
“It’s ugly now no one knows who will remain. Very talented journalists have gone,” said a Standard reporter.
The Kenya Union of Journalists has been silent since the purge began on Friday. But a union official told Business Today; “We will hit them at the right time. Let them pay first.”
