Moi University students will pay Ksh15 million for damages caused by Monday’s riots that led the closure of the institution. Each of the 15,000 students has been fined Ksh1,000 to cater for the losses.
The institution was shut after violence erupted between two camps of students ahead of July 17th Moi University Students Organisation (MUSO) elections, which have been put off indefinitely. Violence broke out during a campaign meeting on Monday, during which university property was damaged.
The university administration has recalled the students on Sunday 19th July. ”After the indefinite closure of the university on 13th July, 2015, the university management today met and decided that the university would be opened and students re-admitted on Sunday 19th July.
A fine of Ksh1,000 has also been levied upon each student for damages,” stated a communication from the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics, Research &extension) Prof B.E.L. Wishitemi through a memo.
